Gouda by Candlelight (Gouda bij Kaarslicht) is one of the most atmospheric winter events in the Netherlands. On this one evening, all electric lights in the historic city center are switched off and thousands of candles illuminate the Gothic Town Hall, the surrounding square, and the streets of the old city. The program runs from 11:00 to 21:00 and includes carol singing, music, and the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree. The 2026 edition is the 71st. Arrive before dark for the best experience and expect large crowds around the market square. Entry is free.
