BBB's Agriculture Minister — handed the nitrogen problem her own party was built to fight

Jaimi van Essen is the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (Minister van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit) in the Schoof cabinet, which took office in 2024. She represents BBB – BoerBurgerBeweging — BoerBurgerBeweging — the party that rose from the farmer protests against nitrogen policy and now governs the very ministry responsible for it.
Van Essen came from within the agricultural sector before entering politics. She is a relatively young minister and a less nationally prominent figure than party leader Caroline van der Plas, but she holds one of the most politically exposed portfolios in the current government.
Her central task is to find a nitrogen reduction approach that satisfies Dutch EU obligations under the Habitats Directive while not triggering a repeat of the 2022 tractor protests — a near-impossible brief. The legal constraints come from the Council of State's 2019 ruling that struck down the previous permit system (Stikstof). The political constraints come from the farming community that BBB was founded to protect.
On 27 June 2026, Van Essen presented a new nitrogen package framed by the government as "creating space for farmers." Six major agricultural organisations — including Agractie, Farmers Defence Force, and the Nederlandse Melkveehouders Vakbond — immediately rejected it in a joint statement, calling it "unprecedented legal chaos and expropriation" and a "frontal assault on agriculture." Their summary: "No 'space for' farmers, but rather the removal of farmers."
Van Essen's position illustrates the central paradox of BBB in government: the party promised to stop policies that force farm closures, but the legal and ecological reality of Stikstof has not changed since those promises were made. Whatever package she presents will either be too soft to satisfy EU requirements or too hard for the farming groups her party depends on.
