RIVM

Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu — the Dutch national institute behind vaccination advice, food-safety science, and public health data

Part of: Expat Essentials

The Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) is the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. It sits under the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, and does the underlying science and monitoring behind a huge amount of everyday Dutch public-health guidance: vaccination programmes, infectious disease tracking, environmental health, food composition and nutrition science, and — very concretely for anyone who spends time outdoors — the official advice on tick bites and Lyme disease.

Where CBS measures the economy and society in numbers, RIVM measures health and environment. Where NVWA enforces food and product safety on the ground, RIVM more often supplies the scientific basis those enforcement decisions rest on, and runs the national vaccination programme (Rijksvaccinatieprogramma) and outbreak monitoring. Dutch law actually requires this split — scientific risk assessment has to stay organisationally separate from enforcement. See NVWA for the fuller explanation of how the two agencies divide the work and where they collaborate.

What it actually does

  • Infectious disease and outbreak monitoring — the source of Dutch COVID-19, flu, and other outbreak data throughout the pandemic years and since
  • National vaccination programme — designs and coordinates the Rijksvaccinatieprogramma for children, and public vaccination campaigns generally
  • Environmental health — air quality, water quality, noise, and chemical exposure monitoring
  • Food and nutrition science — nutrient composition databases, dietary guideline research, and representing the Netherlands in international food-labelling coordination

Recent example: Nutri-Score

RIVM is the Dutch government's scientific representative in the multi-country body that runs Nutri-Score, the A-to-E, green-to-red food nutrition label the Netherlands officially adopted on 1 January 2024 — reviewing the underlying science, running calculations, and refining the algorithm to match Dutch dietary guidelines. For the full picture — how it's scored, the Health Council's critique of the algorithm, whether it actually changes what's on supermarket shelves, and what it doesn't catch — see Nutri-Score.

Why it matters

RIVM is one of the most-cited institutional names in daily Dutch life without most newcomers realising who it actually is: if you get a tick bite, get a childhood vaccination reminder from the GGD, read a nutrition label with a coloured letter on it, or see a government air-quality warning, RIVM is very likely the science behind it. rivm.nl/en is a genuinely useful source in English for practical health questions, not just abstract policy.

These guides are written to help you understand the Netherlands — not to replace professional advice. We do our best to be accurate but we make mistakes and information goes out of date.
