A dating show that turns Dutch awkwardness into something strangely gentle

First Dates is the Dutch version of the international dating format in which strangers meet for a filmed first date in a restaurant.
That sounds like disposable reality television. In the Dutch version, it often lands differently. The tone is awkward, sincere, and much softer than the format description suggests.
The show works because it makes room for a very Dutch kind of vulnerability:
It is part of the same public-TV world as Boer zoekt Vrouw, but more urban, more diverse, and less tied to the fantasy of stable rural life.
If you want to understand how the Dutch can enjoy reality television without making everything aggressively theatrical, First Dates is a good example. The entertainment is there, but the cruelty is turned down.
