The parties that matter right now — who they are, what they stand for, and where they came from
Part of: Dutch Politics
The Dutch parliament has over twenty parties. Most are small and temporary. A handful are the ones you actually need to know — either because they are in government, because they are shaping the debate, or because they have been around long enough to be part of the landscape.
The current coalition (since 2024) is led by the PVV, which came first in the 2023 elections — a result that surprised even the Dutch. They govern with VVD, NSC, and BBB. Progressief Nederland (PRO) and D66 are the main centre-left opposition. CDA is rebuilding under new leadership.
