Speurtocht

Scavenger hunts — a Dutch staple for kids in forests, museums, and city centres

Part of: Dutch Culture

A speurtocht (scavenger hunt, literally "search journey") is a list of items or clues to find without buying anything. You see them everywhere in the Netherlands: laminated sheets at forest entrances, booklets at museum desks, app-based city trails.

Where to find them

  • Forests and nature reserves: Staatsbosbeheer and Natuurmonumenten often leave printed speurtochten at trailheads — free, pick up at the start, drop back at the end. Great for getting kids to actually look at things rather than complain about walking.
  • Museums: Many Dutch museums offer a museumspel or speurtocht booklet at the front desk, often free or for a small fee. The Rijksmuseum, Mauritshuis, and most regional museums have them.
  • City centres: Tourist offices and some local apps offer themed routes — architecture, street art, history.
  • App-based: Geocaching is popular, as are apps like Actionbound for digital speurtochten.

Cross-links

Speurtochten are common at Remembrance and Liberation events for children, and many environmentally-themed outdoor events incorporate them.
