🦁 ARTIS Royal Zoo

One of the oldest zoos in the world, opened in 1838 in the heart of Amsterdam. More than just animals β€” the planetarium, aquarium, micropia (microbe museum), and beautifully maintained gardens make it a full day out.

🌲 Amsterdamse Bos

A vast urban forest on Amsterdam's southern edge, covering 1,000 hectares β€” about three times the size of Central Park. Created in the 1930s as a public works project. Good for cycling, rowing, and long walks through the woods. Home to the Bloesempark (cherry blossoms in spring), an open-air theatre (Bostheater), and major outdoor festivals including Dekmantel.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Rijksmuseum

The Netherlands' national museum, home to Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's The Milkmaid. Book tickets in advance β€” queues can be long.

🌼 Sarphatipark

A quiet, leafy park in the heart of De Pijp β€” a neighbourhood known for its cafΓ©s, the Albert Cuypmarkt, and a young, international crowd. Smaller and calmer than Vondelpark, with a fountain at its centre and benches that fill up fast on sunny days.

βš“ VOC Ship 'Amsterdam'

A full-scale replica of an 18th-century Dutch East India Company merchant vessel, moored alongside the Scheepvaartmuseum. You can walk the decks, peer into the hold, and get a visceral sense of the scale of Dutch maritime trade. Entry is included with the museum ticket.

🌳 Vondelpark

Amsterdam's most beloved urban park, perfect for a stroll, picnic, or people-watching. Open-air theatre in summer, free concerts every weekend.

🌿 Westerpark

A large park in west Amsterdam built around the Westergasfabriek, a beautifully restored former gas factory complex. The industrial buildings now house Fabrique des Lumières, festivals, markets, and restaurants. Good for a walk, a picnic, or catching one of the many outdoor events held here in summer.

πŸšƒ Haags Openbaar Vervoer Museum

A charming tram museum run by volunteers in a restored depot, with a collection of historic trams and buses from Den Haag's public transport history. On select days you can ride a vintage tram through the city. A hidden gem for transport nerds and families alike.

πŸ–οΈ Scheveningen Strand

The most accessible beach in the Netherlands β€” a wide sandy strip right on the North Sea, a tram ride from Den Haag city centre. Busy in summer with beach clubs, volleybal courts, and the long pier stretching into the sea. Wilder and windier in the off-season, which has its own appeal.

🎠 Efteling

One of the oldest and most beloved theme parks in the world, opened in 1952 and rooted in fairy tales and folklore rather than film franchises. The Fairy Tale Forest alone is worth the trip β€” enchanting for children, strangely moving for adults. Consistently ranked among the best theme parks in Europe. Book tickets and parking in advance, especially in school holidays.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Miniworld Rotterdam

A vast scale-model world in the basement of Rotterdam β€” miniature trains, planes, cities, and landscapes covering hundreds of square metres. Surprisingly absorbing for adults as well as kids. Day and night cycles, working vehicles, and extraordinary attention to detail throughout.

πŸ›οΈ Jaarbeurs Utrecht

Utrecht's main convention and exhibition centre, located right next to Utrecht Centraal station. Hosts large-scale trade fairs, consumer expos, esports events, and fan conventions throughout the year. One of the biggest event venues in the Netherlands and very easy to reach by train.

πŸš‚ Spoorwegmuseum

The Dutch Railway Museum occupies a beautifully restored 19th-century station. Stunning historic locomotives and carriages, interactive rides, and themed worlds make it as good for adults as for kids. One of the most impressive museum buildings in the Netherlands.
