Good for cycling, rowing, and long walks through the woods. Home to the Bloesempark (cherry blossoms in spring), an open-air theatre (Bostheater), and major outdoor festivals including Dekmantel.

🍺 Brouwerij 't IJ

Amsterdam's most beloved craft brewery, built inside a working windmill on the Funenkade. A handful of beers on tap β€” try the Zatte or Columbus β€” in a small, characterful taproom. The terrace outside the mill is one of the nicest spots in the city on a sunny afternoon.

A classic Amsterdam grand cafΓ© right on the Amstel river, with one of the best terraces in the city β€” two levels looking out over the water. Big, spacious, and unpretentious. Good for coffee, lunch, or just a long afternoon read.

One of the world's great concert halls, opened in 1888 and still home to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Superb acoustics, a grand 19th-century interior, and programming that ranges from the full orchestral canon to free lunchtime concerts on Wednesdays.

🏬 De Hallen Amsterdam

A former tram depot in the Oud-West neighbourhood, converted into a lively cultural hub with a food hall, artisan market, boutique cinema, hotel, and independent shops. A good rainy-day destination or weekend browse.

A 15th-century Gothic church on Dam Square that has been transformed into one of Amsterdam's top exhibition venues. No longer an active church β€” hosts major international art, history, and photography exhibitions year-round.

🎞️ EYE Film Museum

A striking piece of architecture on the north bank of the IJ, directly opposite Amsterdam Centraal. Part cinematheque, part exhibition space β€” screens rare and classic films daily, with free exhibitions in the basement. Easy to reach via the free ferry.

✨ Fabrique des Lumières

Amsterdam's immersive art centre β€” a vast converted gas works building in the Westergasfabriek complex where floor-to-ceiling projections turn great artworks into atmospheric light shows. The Monet and Van Gogh productions are especially good.

A beautifully curated photography museum on the Keizersgracht. Accessible, thought-provoking exhibitions from both established and emerging photographers.

⚽ Johan Cruijff ArenA

Home of AFC Ajax and the largest stadium in the Netherlands (54,000 seats). Also hosts the biggest stadium concerts in the country. Stadium tours available on non-match days.

One of Amsterdam's best bouldering gyms, with a wide range of routes for all levels and a welcoming atmosphere. Day passes available, no experience needed.

🏭 NDSM Loods

A vast former shipyard warehouse on the north bank of the IJ, turned into one of Amsterdam's most distinctive cultural venues. The cavernous industrial space hosts festivals, markets, exhibitions, theatre, and large-scale events. Easy to reach via the free NDSM ferry from Amsterdam Centraal. Part of the broader NDSM creative quarter, a hub for artists and studios.

🎬 Pathé Tuschinski

Arguably the most beautiful cinema in the world β€” an Art Deco palace built in 1921 with an extraordinary interior. Worth visiting even if you don't catch a film. The main auditorium (Zaal 1) is a listed monument.

The Netherlands' national museum, home to Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's The Milkmaid. Book tickets in advance β€” queues can be long.

🌼 Sarphatipark

🎨 Stedelijk Museum

A small, much-loved spot in Den Haag serving Lebanese manouche flatbreads β€” thin, crispy, and topped with za'atar, cheese, or meat. Simple menu done extremely well. Expect a queue at lunchtime.

A charming tram museum run by volunteers in a restored depot, with a collection of historic trams and buses from Den Haag's public transport history. On select days you can ride a vintage tram through the city. A hidden gem for transport nerds and families alike.

One of the world's finest private car collections β€” over 230 historic vehicles spanning from an 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen to 20th-century classics. The building is purpose-built and beautifully presented. A genuine must for car enthusiasts and worth a detour for anyone else.

A small but world-class collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings housed in a 17th-century palace beside the Hofvijver. Home to Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson. Intimate scale means you can see everything without exhaustion.

The most accessible beach in the Netherlands β€” a wide sandy strip right on the North Sea, a tram ride from Den Haag city centre. Busy in summer with beach clubs, volleybal courts, and the long pier stretching into the sea. Wilder and windier in the off-season, which has its own appeal.

🎠 Efteling

One of the oldest and most beloved theme parks in the world, opened in 1952 and rooted in fairy tales and folklore rather than film franchises. The Fairy Tale Forest alone is worth the trip β€” enchanting for children, strangely moving for adults. Consistently ranked among the best theme parks in Europe. Book tickets and parking in advance, especially in school holidays.

πŸ›οΈ City Hall Rotterdam

One of the few pre-war buildings left in central Rotterdam, the ornate 1920 City Hall survived the 1940 bombing largely intact. Its Beaux-Arts interior is worth stepping inside β€” the entrance hall and council chamber are open to visitors on guided tours and open days.

Rotterdam's principal concert hall and congress centre, home to the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. The main hall has excellent acoustics and hosts everything from classical concerts to pop and jazz. A cornerstone of Rotterdam's cultural life since 1966.

Feyenoord's legendary home ground, opened in 1937 and one of the most atmospheric football stadiums in Europe. Stadium tours available; also hosts major concerts. A Rotterdam institution.

Rotterdam's indoor street food market in the Fenix Food Factory building in Katendrecht β€” a former warehouse on the south bank of the Maas. Dozens of stalls, craft beer, and a lively atmosphere. The neighbourhood itself, once rough, is now one of the most interesting in the city.

🚒 Hotel New York

A grand cafΓ© and hotel in the former headquarters of the Holland America Line, from which millions of emigrants sailed to the United States. Right on the Maas waterfront in Wilhelminapier with sweeping river views. A beautiful building with a great terrace β€” the history adds something to every visit.

🎲 Kijk-Kubus Museum-House

One of Rotterdam's most iconic landmarks β€” a cluster of cube-shaped houses tilted at 45 degrees, designed by Piet Blom in 1984. One cube is open as a museum-house so you can experience what it's actually like to live inside. Disorienting, clever, and very Rotterdam.

πŸͺ Markthal Rotterdam

A spectacular horseshoe-shaped market hall completed in 2014, with a vast arched interior covered in an enormous artwork of fruits, vegetables, and insects. Fresh produce, street food, and specialty stalls on the ground floor, apartments above. Impressive even if you don't buy anything.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Miniworld Rotterdam

A vast scale-model world in the basement of Rotterdam β€” miniature trains, planes, cities, and landscapes covering hundreds of square metres. Surprisingly absorbing for adults as well as kids. Day and night cycles, working vehicles, and extraordinary attention to detail throughout.

πŸŽͺ Rotterdam Ahoy

Rotterdam's largest event complex β€” a convention centre, concert arena, and exhibition hall in one. Hosts everything from the North Sea Jazz Festival to Eurovision and trade fairs. Easy to reach by metro (Zuidplein).

πŸ›οΈ Jaarbeurs Utrecht

Utrecht's main convention and exhibition centre, located right next to Utrecht Centraal station. Hosts large-scale trade fairs, consumer expos, esports events, and fan conventions throughout the year. One of the biggest event venues in the Netherlands and very easy to reach by train.

The Dutch Railway Museum occupies a beautifully restored 19th-century station. Stunning historic locomotives and carriages, interactive rides, and themed worlds make it as good for adults as for kids. One of the most impressive museum buildings in the Netherlands.

🎡 TivoliVredenburg

Utrecht's main music venue, a striking modernist building in the city centre rebuilt and expanded in 2014. Six halls of different sizes accommodate everything from intimate club nights to large concerts seating thousands. One of the best-programmed venues in the Netherlands, covering rock, pop, electronic, jazz, classical, and world music.
